Philosophy
Montessori inspired — not a label, a way of being with children
Montessori in practice
1 / 7

We describe ourselves as a Montessori inspired nursery because the philosophy shapes how we arrange rooms, choose materials, speak with children, and plan the rhythm of the day. We are not a franchise or a rigid programme; we are a Welsh nursery whose daily practice is deeply inspired by Montessori's respect for the child's inner drive to learn.
What you will notice
- A prepared environment — beautiful, ordered, and sized for small hands. Everything has a place; children can choose, repeat, and master without unnecessary adult interference.
- Time to concentrate — we protect deep play and focused work, stepping in with warmth when guidance or safety is needed.
- Real, purposeful activity— pouring, cleaning, caring for plants, preparing snack: jobs that build independence and self-esteem, not "busy work".
- Freedom within boundaries — clear, kind limits help children feel secure while they practise decision-making and self-regulation.
Child-led, adult-guided
We believe children learn best by doing. Our educators observe closely, introduce new challenges at the right moment, and celebrate effort as much as outcome. Collaboration is encouraged; kindness is modelled; joy is taken seriously.
Aligned with the Curriculum for Wales
Our Montessori inspired approach works hand-in-hand with the Curriculum for Wales. For children aged 3 and over, we follow the Curriculum's four purposes — developing children as ambitious and capable learners, enterprising and creative contributors, ethical and informed citizens, and healthy and confident individuals.
Activities naturally cover the six Areas of Learning and Experience: Expressive Arts; Health and Well-being; Humanities; Languages, Literacy and Communication; Mathematics and Numeracy; and Science and Technology. The Montessori emphasis on hands-on discovery, concentration, and following the child's interests aligns beautifully with the Curriculum's vision for child-led learning.
Outdoor learning
We believe outdoor learning is essential, not optional. Children access our secure outdoor spaces every day — exploring nature, developing physical skills, and connecting with the natural world. Outdoor play builds resilience, supports well-being, and brings learning to life in ways that indoor spaces alone cannot. Whether it's mud kitchens, planting, water play, or simply feeling the wind and rain, outdoor time is woven into every day at Bijou.
Children's rights
Everything we do is grounded in respect for the child. We uphold the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), enshrined in Welsh law since 2011 — every child has the right to play, to be safe, to be heard, and to develop to their fullest potential.
If you would like to see the approach in action, the best next step is a visit. You will feel the calm hum of children at work — and see how our Montessori inspired ethos becomes everyday life at Bijou.
